Two Days Off, And Then To Work.

By Threelight, 2 April, 2010 9:36 pm

One of the downsidesa of where I’m working is that the only day that is universally recognised as a day off is Christmas Day. Because, as I know you have probably guessed, the organisation is a 24/7 type operation, there is really no distinction between Bank Holidays or weekends and such like. So, while the rest of the people around you observice the usual 4 days off for Easter and the Bank Holidays, unless I am not down to be in that day, or I decide to take it as a day off (arranged well in advance of course), then I have to work it. Such is life. I am working mid -afternoon to late evening tomorrow, Sunday and Monday.

Not to worry though. Yesterday I took my car to our “designated” garage, where it had a full service, which I’m happy about. Nothing serious, but there’s two tyres I have to get later on in the week, when hopefully the place I think is still there, will be open.

Today, I went with Polyhex and Agent to the local park to do a a number of geocaches, which was fun and a bit muddy. I remember last time that my GPS was all over the place, mainly because I didn’t know how to work it. But now, even though I still don’t’ know how to properly work it, I was able to navigate reasonably well. I didn’t find any caches myself: I left that to the seasoned professionals. Thanks to Polyhex and Agent again for allowing me to get some fresh air (not to mention making 4 burps).

Blog wise, I’ve re-arranged and updated my links again. One thing I’ve noticed is that I have to get new links to include on that thar right hand side. I have a particular process I go through when selecting the links, and looks like I have to make some time to do that (or maybe taking my time is the best thing to do) I know from just looking athrough a few blogs that it’s not as popular as it used to be, and that quite a lot of bloggers have silenced their keyboards. It may be slightly difficult to look for new ones. Oh dear.

The Holiday Was A Good ‘Un.

By Threelight, 11 March, 2010 9:24 pm

Well, I ‘m back. I’ve been back since Saturday, but have only now decided to put a post together. I am off work until Saturday, so I’m happy I have more free time other than my holiday in Spain.

The holiday went fine, and the time went really slow. I suppose that’s probably because I was so relaxed over the 15 days. The weather was kind, and I managed to get a small tan, which is now doing it’s best to vanash. The most important thing is that you can tell that I’ve caught some sun, which to me was very important throughout the holday. When it was sunny, it was really warm, so I managed to get some rays at every chance I could.

I met a few new people that I hadn’t met at other times I’ve been there, and went to a few new restaurants, some good and some particularly bad. In the past we went to a few Chinese restaurants in the area, but in the end we only went to one: the evening I arrived. I suppose there’s a number of reasons why that happened: getting sick of Chinese food, or not many of them being around the area like there used to be, or maybe because eating habits change over a period of years. Saying that, I mostly ate fish and chips. The fish was good, but the chips varied from restaurant to restaurant.

I also drank a lot more beer on this holiday han what I have in the past. Normally I like my usual drink of Southern Comfort, but, as this is in fairly short supply in restaurants these days, I was sticking to beer. Also, when with friends, out came the beer (not to the falling down stage and drunk, but just enough to relax). At one stage you couldn’t even buy Southern comfort anywhere in the shops of the area, but the local shop now stocks it. That’s mainly because the area is changing to give the people of the area (mostly ex-pats and holiday-goers) like their home comforts, after all.

I have also read all the books that I took with me, thinking that I wouldn’t do a lot of reading this holiday, but reading I did (mini reviews of two of the books definitely coming up in future posts – hopefully). Shows again that it was a relaxing holiday.

When i got home, I had my work shift rota to have a look at, and oh dear, it’s going to be a particularly bad year time wise, I have loads of early shifts, and probably an equal number of late shifts.

Over my holiday, I did think about the future of this here blog, and the good news is that I’m not giving up quite yet. I plan to continue my posts on “DVDs In My Collection” and also branching out a bit with books. Posts about work and how crap it’s going will be few and far between now, but I do want to mention a few people I see and talk to, but it will not be a bitching session that this and that happened. Probably, in the past I’ve wanted to say something about how the work’s going, but always change my mind, hence very few posts.

So, welcome to the first post of March.

How Many Idiots Does It Take To Change A Blog Theme?

By Threelight, 26 November, 2009 9:50 pm

(Please. Keep your answers to yourself.)

What originally started as more of a blog update exercise turned into what I consider quite a pleasant change. These colours closely match those of my original blogspot, and I just find the whole layout agreeable. I know I’ve kept to the old layout for a long period of time, but I change my blog theme as regularly as they find bugs in Microsoft Windows releases, so I thought why not. Even down to the Twitter link, which I’m quite happy about. (Let’s face it, the Twitter widget I had on the last blog theme was minimal, and basically, crap. Hence, also, the change…when it all worked out.

So there you have it. I’ve updated my version of Wordpress, did some blog housekeeping, so at least I’ve cleared out some of the cobwebs that may have been around.

Hey There! Could This Be Version 2.0?

By Threelight, 25 November, 2009 11:14 pm

I’m back a lot earlier than I thought. I want to start blogging again.

I felt I couldn’t really blog anything at all for a good few weeks, hence my absence. External factors were to blame rather than anything to do with the act of blogging itself. I’ve now set a few ground rules for myself to make sure I continue blogging in the future. I like blogging, and the self-imposed “ban” has made me a bit more hungry to post than what I thought it would.

The ground rules I’ve decided upon are staying unwritten, and I’ll be doing my best not to break them. Honest.

And I’m back not because it’s my birthday neither.

Blog Break Number 1

By Threelight, 7 November, 2009 8:20 pm

I think it’s about time for a blog break.

I am working crazy hours at the moment for my new job, which has it’s ups and downs. But basically, I have not had the motivation to put any posts up this month nor since the last one in the middle of last month. I wouldn’t mind, but even my blog reading has taken a slight knock as well. With that in mind, I think I’ll not post this month.

I am planning to be back in December when my hours are slightly more reasonable. So, until then…stay healthy.

“Yes, sir. As requested, it’s full of bugs, which means people will be forced to upgrade for years.”

By Threelight, 9 July, 2009 9:16 pm

At the weekend I upgraded to the latest of the WordPress applications, version 2.8. In the past, every upgrade has meant more and more functionality, and I knew that I was in fairly safe hands; these upgrades were tested and all would be fine when I upgraded.

Not so with this upgrade. It made a mess of my whole WordPress set up. I downgraded to version 2.7, and lost some more of the functionality, but at least I was able to post (hence one last night). Not being able to directly on the screen where I’m supposed to very easily post was a bit of a kick in the teeth.

So I did the only thing I could do: I downgraded to 2.6 and upgraded to 2.7. Everything now works, except for the ability to upload images directly to the post. But a little bit of HTML knowledge goes a long way. I’ll work my way around it.

But I’m not likely to upgrade to 2.8 any time soon. It looks like for once, WordPress have released a bad upgrade. I just hope there won’t be many more.

Another Year Passes, This Time Without A Fanfare.

By Threelight, 10 June, 2008 7:38 pm

Well, would you believe it. My blog is now 4 years old.

Well, it was 4 years old on Saturday, and in my current state of very sporadic posting, it went uncelebrated, which in itself is quite odd. So, happy belated birthday to Threelight’s News then.

At the moment, I’m typing this, listening to my IPod, on shuffle. I’ve had a particularly difficult day at work, which saw my work gradually building up, and then finally, as I was helping a fellow employee with a problem she was having, then this fellow employee suddenly bursts into tears. I hate it when that happens. It was very much like this post, where the person in question just turned on the water works. Apparently, it wasn’t me who caused it, which was good. Other things happening in her life, you must understand.

In other news, I was kept aware by my old classmates (I didn’t think I’d ever have that to say!) of the reunion that took place on Saturday at my old school. And 48 hours after it took place, I saw pictures. A couple of them, I recognised straight away. A few I didn’t remember. But then there was one picture I saw that made me look twice. The person in question looked a bit like a nerd when he was at school, always in a corner keeping himself to himself. I had a look at the name badge on his shirt, and then realised: blimey, it’s him. And not looking like a nerd. By all accounts, quite successful. And with a belly to rival mine.

A great time was had by all apparently, and lots of beer got drunk (messy for one or two, so I hear!).

New Design

By Threelight, 27 April, 2008 4:34 pm

Here it is. The new blog design.

I know that most of my readers probably preferred the old one, but I decided that a change was in order. There’s a few things about it I’m not happy with myself, but I had to change it.

So there.

Er…no

By Threelight, 17 April, 2008 9:30 pm

In retrospect (grown-up word alert!), bad idea to have the Twitter thingy there. It looks out of place in a big way.

It will make an appearance again

Eventually.

Copy Cat, Stole A Rat

Yes, I have the “Twitter Badge” as wot Swiss Toni has got. I had a closer look at this during work today (shock horror! On T’Internet at work!), and I decided to give this thing a go. It may work, then again, maybe not. It may prove addictive, maybe not. The most difficult bit was trying to place the badge on the side bar. This really means I need a re-design of my blog now!
